Cornell's Berreyesa Earns Silver at Junior World Championships

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Freshman Andrew Berreyesa took silver at 82 kg in Greco-Roman at the 2018 Junior World Championships in Trnava, Slovakia on Wednesday afternoon.

Berreyesa fell to three-time age group world champion Aleksandr Komarov of Russia in the finals, 10-0. He edged Muhutdin Saricicek of Turkey 2-2 on criteria in the semifinals after topping Italy's Simone Fidelbo and Uzbekistan's Abubakr Alimov earlier on Tuesday.

Berreyesa edged Muhutdin Saricicek of Turkey 2-2 on criteria in the semifinals and will meet three-time age group world champion Aleksandr Komarov of Russia in the finals. It is the second straight year the United States has a world finalist at the Junior World Championships, with Kamal Bey and Cevion Severado earning titles in 2017.

A first period takedown was the difference for Berreyesa, who surrendered two passivity points before taking the victory. Earlier in the day Berreyesa notched wins over Italy's Simone Fidelbo and Uzbekistan's Abubakr Alimov.
