Mattison and Galton Claim Pioneer Open Titles

Ryan Mattison (Brockport) and Mike Galton (Warsaw) claimed individual titles at the 2018 Alfred State Pioneer Open. In total, seven Pioneers earned top three honors.

Mattison won the 13-athlete heavyweight bracket with a perfect 4-0 day with four pins. Mattison led a sweep of the bracket by the Pioneers as Aaron Paddock (Warsaw) finished 2nd and Kyle Fitzgerald (Turin/South Lewis) finished 3rd.

Mattison pinned Garrett Smead in 35 seconds to open the day. He then pinned Tyler Vido (Unattached) in 4:52 to advance to the semifinals. In the semis he pinned Anthony Robinson in 2:43 to advance to the finals vs. his teammate Paddock. In the finals, Mattison was able to pin Paddock for the title.
Paddock finished 3-1 on the day. He pinned Matthew Jordan (Jamestown CC) in 23 seconds and the pinned Mitch Lattuca in 54 seconds to advance to the semis. He was able to pull out a 4-2 sudden death victory over his teammate Kyle Fitzgerald to advance to the finals vs. Mattison.
Galton went 4-0 in the 157 lb. weight class to claim the title. He earned a 16-3 victory over Victor Elias (Pitt Bradford), pinned Caleb Palmatier (Jamestown CC) and then pinned Zhang (RPI) to head into his final match vs. another undefeated wrestler Michael Phelps. In his last match he downed Phelps to earn the title.

Yameek Kendrick (Lisle/Whitney Point) was 2-1 on the day and was 2nd at 141, Jesse Pitoni (Churchville Chili) was 1-1 on the day and finished 2nd at 125, and Devin Horton (Apalachin/Owego Free) was 1-1 in the 165 lb. bracket to earn 2nd.

All weight classes except for the heavyweight bracket were competed in a round-robin format with every wrestler taking on the other athletes in their weight class.

The Pioneers are back on the mat on January 5th when they travel to the Waynesburg Invitational.
