Troy Forte wins state mat title

Forte won four matches at the state meet that was hosted by Syracuse.

Forte opened the state tournament with a 9-1 major decision over Teddy Popolizio from Section 2.

In the second round, Forte disposed of Jacob Tyler from Section 10 with a fall in 5:41.

Saturday, Forte defeated Chris Trombley from Section 7 in the semifinals 3-2 to advance to the finals.

In the championship bout, Forte blanked John Gartiser from Section 9 by a 5-0 score.

The extremely excited Forte immediately hugged his coach, Ernie DiBella, who also won a state wrestling title for Pittsford.

The 125-pounder wasn t finished celebrating. He raced into the stands and hugged his parents before returning to accept the state trophy.

Forte completes his high school wrestling career with an overall record of 236-22 that is the all-time New York state record for victories.
