Olean's Hulse captures Section 6, 285-pound title

LOCKPORT — Olean's Tanner Hulse started as a fourth seed, but left the gymnasium as the No. 1 285-pound wrestler in Section 6 Division I on Saturday.

Hulse won all three of his matches after starting in the quarterfinals, first with a pin, then a 5-2 decision followed by a sudden victory in overtime of the championship final. Hulse defeated Niagara Wheatfield's Kevin Halford 4-2. By winning his weight class, Hulse clinched a berth in the NYSPHSAA championship tournament, while others will await at-large seeding to be announced Tuesday night or Wednesday morning, coach Mike O'Connor said.

Hulse moved up from 220 pounds late in the season.
