Alfred State Pioneers Defeat Keystone and Ulster CC in Home Tri-Match

The Alfred State wrestling team made an impressive home debut as they defeated Keystone 33-21 and Ulster CC 42-13 to improve to 2-1 on the season in dual matches.

The match vs. Keystone came down to the final two bouts. With the score tied at 21-21, Harry Nice (Dundee) earned a forfeit victory at 197 and Jacob DeWall (Waterloo) sealed the win with a pin in 59 seconds of Cam Smith in the heavyweight bout.

After the Pioneers forfeited the 125 lb. match, Jesse Pitoni (Churchville Chili) got the Pioneers going with a 9-2 win at 133. Owen Kissell (Alden) pined Maurice Young in 1:21 at 141 to give the Pioneers their first lead. Keystone earned a pin at 149 and Jesse Johnson (Horseheads) made it 15-12 Alfred State with a forfeit win at 157. Keystone grabbed their final lead of the bout with a major decision at 165 but Blake Ilges (Canisteo Greenwood) got the lead right back with a pin of Jonathan Grimm at 174 (1:27). A tech fall victory for the Giants at 184 tied the match up at 21-21 heading into the deciding final two matches.

In their match vs. Ulster, the Senators jumped out to an early 10-0 lead after two weight classes. Kissell registered his second pin of the day over Jacob Studt (2:44) to get the Pioneers rolling. Andrew Plunkett (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) gave the Pioneers a 12-10 lead with a forfeit victory at 149. The Senators took the match at 157 but that was the last team points they would score. Johnson pinned Daniel Heffner in 5:49 at 165 before Loujerry Etienne (Brooklyn/New Visions), Ilges, and Nice earned forfeit wins to build the lead to 36-13. DeWall capped the action for the Pioneers on the day with his second pin of the day. He pinned Diego Orellana in 4:13.

In the third match of the day Ulster CC got a victory in the heavyweight match to defeat Keystone 30-24.

The blue & gold are next in action on November 24th when they travel to Oswego to compete in the NYS Championships.
