RIT wins 2019 New York State Collegiate Championship

OSWEGO, NY -- The RIT wrestling team won the 2019 New York State Collegiate Championship from the campus of SUNY Oswego Sunday. The Tigers were first out of 13 teams with a score of 154.5 points. Kaidon Winters (Athens, PA/Athens Area) (157 lbs.), Dempsey King (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) (165 lbs) and Joe Lupisella (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) (174 lbs.) each won individual titles. Winters broke RIT Athletics Hall of Fame member Matt Hamill's career record for pins.

Winters entered Sunday tied with Hamill with 47 career pins. After a win over Destin Morano (SUNY Sullivan) in the first round, Winters set the record with a pin of Kwan Wills (SUNY Oneonta) at 3:43. He went to pin Zack Brown (SUNY Brockport) in the quarterfinals to give him 49 pins for his career. Winters defeated teammate Austin Lamb (Owego, NY/Tioga), 3-1 in the semifinals, and beat Gianno Silba (SUNY Cortland) 7-0 in the championship bout.

Dempsey defeated Alex Leone (SUNY Cortland) with a fall at 1:57 in his opening round match at 165 lbs. He pinned Caleb Beach (SUNY Oswego) at 1:48 in the quarterfinals, and defeated Charlie Grygas (SUNY Oswego) with an 11-2 major decision in the semifinals. King beat Austin Whitney (Ithaca) 5-2 in the championship bout.

Lupisella began with a 17-2 technical fall win over Roman Jellick (SUNY Cortland) at 174 lbs. He went on to beat Blake Ilges (Alfred State) 10-5, and Matt Shields (SUNY Oneonta) 3-2 in the quarterfinals. He advanced to the championship bout on. a medical forfeit and. defeated teammate Nate Bradley (Athens, PA/Athens Area) 10-5 in the championship match.

Isaiah Ocasio (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) brought home a third place finish at 141 lbs. He beat Owen Kissell (Alfred State) with an 8-0 major decision in his opening bout. Ocasio defeated Brecan Saul (Ithaca) 10-9, and Alex Prunoske (Safety Harbor, FL/Clearwater Catholic) 3-1, before a loss to Ahken Chu (SUNY Oneonta).

Nate Osborne (Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) went 4-2. at 133 lbs., taking home fourth place, while Owen Albanese (Canastota, NY/Canastota) brought home seventh place at 285 lbs.

RIT returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 6, when the Tigers host the 54th annual RIT Invitational from Gordon Field House and Activities Center.
