Torsten Gillespie won his first Section 5 Class AA wrestling championship last Saturday in the meet at Spencerport High School.

The Webster Schroeder junior captured the 119-pound weight class in dramatic fashion as he pinned Spencerport's Anthony Borzilleri in 3:07. He improved to 14-0 on the season with the victory. Gillespie has a 79-14 career record going in to the Super Sectionals this weekend at Fairport.

Gillespie gained the finals against the No. 1 seeded Ranger with a 5-4 decision over Desi Green of Rush-Henrietta in the semifinals. Gillespie pinned Churchville-Chili's Ken Perry in the quarterfinals.

Gillespie is the lone Warrior wrestler to advance. Two other wrestlers, however, placed fifth, Dan Palermo (125) and Dave Carletta (275).

Following Saturday's semifinal round, Spencerport held only an eight-point lead on Brockport for the wrestling title. However, the Rangers ended up advancing 13 wrestlers to the Blue Devils eight, and went on to retain the sectional title.

Spencerport amassed 250 points as Brockport was second with 221 points. Penfield, which will advance nine wrestlers to the Super Sectionals, took third place with 162 points.

"It was great to be in this atmosphere with the Spencerport fans, " said Penfield head coach John Leone, a former assistant at Spencerport.

Schroeder placed 11th with 54.5 points.

Co-sportsmanship awards went to Penfield's C.J. Fogle and Fairport's Sean Sechrist.

Wrestling Coordinator Jason Bovenzi, who also is the Pittsford head coach, was impressed with the tournament this year.

"I was very proud about the finals at the counties and the Class AA sectionals, " he said. "I thought the production (drum line) that Spencerport put on at the start of the ceremony was second to none. It was a first-class production here. A great experience.

"We're excited about the guys who are going to the state qualifier and hopefully we'll put together a nice team for the state tournament. "

Pittsford's Kyle Borshoff received the 96 to 140 weight class Outstanding Wrestler Award, as Brockport's 215-pounder Alex Nwaehujor won the 145 to 275 weight class Outstanding Wrestler honor.

The class champions were: 96 - Trevor Irwin (Brockport); 103 - Alex Marianetti (Athena); 112 - Ryan Nicoletta (Penfield); 119 - Torsten Gillespie (Schroeder); 125 - Mark Ranzenbach (Hilton); 130 - Kyle Borshoff (Pittsford); 135 - John-Martin Cannon (Brockport); 140 - Brandon Volpe (Athena); 145 - Justin James (Brockport); 152 - Bryan Bourne (Spencerport); 150 - Eric Schuth (Brockport); 171 - Justin Linville (Spencerport); 189 - Ben Lambiase (Spencerport); 215 - Alex Nwaehujor (Brockport); 275 - Mike Castro (Churchville-Chili).

The top four wrestlers advance to the Super Sectionals this weekend at Fairport. Friday's quarterfinal round starts at 5 p.m. for Classes AA and A. The small schools quarters are at Cal-Mum on Friday.

The semifinals on Saturday at Fairport begining at 10 a.m. for the large schools. The small school semifinals are also at Fairport, scheduled to start 12:30 p.m.
