Wrestlers Split Matches at Virginia Duals
Golden Eagles beat Davidson 39-9 in second match

Golden Eagles compete at prestigious Virginia DualsThe SUNY Brockport Wrestling team dropped its first match 21-14 to James Madison University in the opening round of the Virginia Duals Tournament in Hampton, VA. The Golden Eagles rebounded to take a 39-9 victory over Davidson College in the consolation bracket.

The second seeded Golden Eagles (1-2) dropped a tough 21-14 decision to James Madison in the morning match. Brockport received wins from junior Shaheim Bradshaw (Huntington, NY/Huntington), senior Don Ooton (Virginia Beach, VA/Great Bridge), sophomore Eric Van Patten (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville), and junior Brett Giehl (Rochester, NY/Greece- Athena).

Bradshaw and Giehl earned major decisions at 165 and 184 pounds respectively to account for eight of the 14 points for the Golden Eagles against James Madison. Ooton won a 5-2 decision at 149 pounds and Van Patten earned a 15-13 decision at 174 pounds.

The Golden Eagles fought back to take a 39-9 win over Davidson College in the consolation bracket later in the day on Friday.

Against Davidson, Glen DiStefano opened the match with a pin just 48 seconds into the 125-pound match and 133-pounder Pat Flynn won an 8-3 decision to give the Golden Eagles an early lead.

In the middleweight matches, Ooton and Andrew Grillo (Holley, NY/Holley) posted consecutive victories with Ooton scoring a pin in 1:46 at 149.

The Golden Eagles will wrestle at 4 p.m. Saturday against the loser of the South Dakota State/Roger Williams match, which is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday.
