BU wrestling captures New York State Championship
Four Bearcats win titles at 42nd Annual event, held at West Gym

VESTAL, N.Y. -- Binghamton wrestling made the most of its host role, capturing the program's second team title at the 42nd Annual New York State Intercollegiate Championships, fueled by WWSport.com and Asics.

Wrestling at home in the West Gym for two days, the Bearcats crowned a program-best four individual champions and had nine placewinners. Binghamton produced 149.5 points to overtake runnerup Columbia (132.5) and defeat the rest of the 19-team field. The last time Binghamton won the event was in the third year of the championship back in 1972.

Claiming titles were sophomore 184-pound Nate Schiedel, junior 165-pound Justin Lister, junior 157-pound Matt Kaylor and sophomore 197-pound Cody Reed. Senior 174-pound Ryan McGarity placed third, sophomore 184-pound John Paris was fourth, sophomore 125-pound Derek Steeley was fifth, senior 141-pound Anwar Goeres took seventh and freshman heavyweight Lance Moore placed eighth.

"Overall, I was very impressed and pleased with our performance on day 2," head coach Pat Popolizio said. "The guys battled back after some dissappointing results yesterday and reversed some outcomes. That allowed us to win the team title. Individually, I thought Matt (Kaylor) looked very impressive and Nate (Schiedel) did well in a very competitve weight class with three nationally-ranked guys. He is starting to separate himself within our conference."

Schiedel, ranked 11th in the nation and the top-seed, went 5-0 with two pins and a major decision. He posted a 6-3 decision in the finals against Ben Clymer of Hofstra to capture his second straight state crown. Schiedel is 27-4 overall with a team-best nine pins. Top-seeded Lister plowed his way through the 165-pound field, going 4-0 with three pins. In Sunday's final, he earned a 4-2 decision over second-seeded Eren Civan of Columbia to repeat as champion. Kaylor went 3-0 and capped his title with a 14-6 major decision over Hunter's Eduardo Delgado in the final. Kaylor raised his record to 22-5 overall. Reed went 4-0 to win his first collegiate tournament. He notched a pin in the semifinals and won an 8-6 decision over Cortland's Jared Myhrberg in the final.

Though not wrestling with some injuries, sophomore 149-pound Donnie Vinson still earned an award. Vinson was recognized as the New York State Coaches Association Rookie of the Year for his 2009-10 season, which included a 33-13 record and NCAA tournament berth. Vinson is the first BU wrestler or coach honored by the association in 20 years.

Binghamton has a strong test against the nation's top program, Cornell, Friday night in Ithaca. A home dual with No. 12 Iowa State follows Sunday night.
