Brockport Takes 10th at State Championships

Dillon Stowell and five other Golden Eagles earn place finishes

Freshman Dillon Stowell (Gouverneur, NY/Gouverneur) wrestled his way to a third place finish in the 125-pound open division bracket and fellow freshman Roy Daniels (Spencerport, NY/Olentangy (OH)) earned a fifth place finish at 174 pounds in the A Division bracket leading The College at Brockport Wrestling team to a 10th place finish Sunday at the New York State Championship Tournament at Cornell University.

The Golden Eagles earned 40.5 points and finished just one point behind Ithaca College (41.5) in the final team standings. Cornell won the team scoring with 207 points followed by Hofstra (157 points), Binghamton University (139), Army (136.5), Columbia (134), Cortland (105.5), Buffalo (100), Niagara CC (65), Ithaca and Brockport. The Golden Eagles finished ahead of 10 other teams that scored points in the tournament that combines the wrestlers from all NCAA Division I, II and III schools in New York as well as Community Colleges.

In the A-Division, which accounted for the team scoring, Brockport had three place finishers with Daniels finishing highest with his fifth place finish. Asher Kramer (Sloatsburg, NY/Suffern) was a sixth place finisher at 125 pounds and Cole Tristram (Newton Falls, NY/Clifton-Fine) took seventh in the heavyweight division for the Golden Eagles.

In the Open Division brackets, Brockport added three addition place finishers as Stowell led the way with his third place finish in the 125-pound bracket. Adam Troy (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) took sixth at 149 pounds and Kyler Agoney (Peru, NY/Peru) was tied for 8th place in the 125-pound bracket.

Stowell won his first three matches of the day with a technical fall, a 7-5 decision over a Division I Army wrestler and a pin in 1:48 before losing a major decision in the championship semifinals.

Daniels pinned his first opponent and won a 5-4 decision over Hofstra's Frank Affronti in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Daniels dropped a 5-0 decision to a Division I wrestler from Columbia.

Kramer earned a technical fall victory in his opener but dropped a quarterfinal bout and wrestled back through the consolation bracket with two decisions and a medical forfeit before falling in the fifth place match.

Tristram lost his opening bout but defeated Chris Ramierez from Ithaca in the consolation bracket before pinning James Benjamin from Buffalo to capture seventh place.

Troy also lost his opening bout of the day but came back on a mission in the consolation bracket pinning four straight opponents and posting a 7-5 decision over Army's Shane Connolly before falling in the fifth place match. Troy was the only wrester in the tournament to post four pins.

Brockport heavyweight Cory Quintana (Schenectady, NY/Mohanasen) recorded the second fastest pin of the tournament with an 18-second fall in the consolation bracket of the open division.
