The Flyers, Warriors and Wildcats varsity wrestling squads all came up short during the 14-team competition held at Maryvale on Saturday, but some individual members were victorious.

Niagara Falls won the tournament with 210 points followed by Roy-Hart earning 162 for second place and Canisteo tallied 157 for third.

Maryvale was the only local squad to break into the top 10, scoring 69 points with one first, second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth place finishes.

Despite the local teams' low standings, each squad saw at least one wrestler advance to a championship or consolation match.

Flyer Pat McGlaughlin advanced to the championship contest for the 98-pound weight class but he lost to Newark's Brad Vandermortel, falling in 3:10.

The Wildcats saw Greg Anglerski win the championship title in the 135-pound class after outscoring Niagara Falls' Angelo Cusatis, 6-4.

Depew placed 13th overall with 48 points while Cheektowaga Central had 64 points earning 11th.

Both Maryvale and Cheektowaga had wrestlers advance to a consolation match.

In the 112-pound division, Maryvale's Curtis Voak lost to Joe Moran of Royhart, 8-2 while his teammate Jeff Digati dropped C.J. Frost of Royhart in 3:40 during the 119 pound contest.

The Warriors had three of their members qualify for consolation matches but each of them lost.

Newark's Sean Safford brought down Cheektowaga's Jon Messina in :59 in the 145-pound competition. Messina's teammate Kitty Vongprachanh lost to Niagara Falls' Joshua Eagan, 3-0 and Jon Krol fell short in a 5-4 decision versus Amherst's Tom Lester in the 189-pound consolation event.

During matches determining the fifth places finishers, Cheektowaga Jamie Messina shutout Newark's Henry Bouwens, 4-0 in the 125 pound competition while his teammate Kyle Reeb beat Leroy's Justin Casper, 11-6 in the 135-pound division.

Depew's John Munzel and Frank Monroe and Maryvale's Ted Stanek all fell during their contests.

In junior varsity action, the Flyers finished fourth while Cheektowaga placed 14th.

The junior Flyers earned one first place victory after Alex Bagne dropped Williamsville North's Chris Schuster in :59 seconds in a 96- pound class championship match.

Maryvale's John Leviness also qualified for a championship match in the 130-pound division but fell to Royhart's Matt Johnson in :45.
