ITHACA, N.Y. - The Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) announced Wednesday the hiring of Gene Nighman '81 as its executive director. He replaces former executive director Greg Strobel who passed away last October.

A Cornell Athletics Hall of Fame inductee in 1992, Nighman was a three-time All-Ivy first team selection and won the EIWA title at 142 pounds in 1981. He compiled a career record of 71-18-1 highlighted by a seventh-place finish at the 1981 NCAA championships.

Following his graduation from Cornell, Nighman served as the head wrestling coach at SUNY-Cortland for 16 seasons (1983-99), guiding the Red Dragons to a 163-104-3 dual meet record. In 2011, Nighman was inducted into the National Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Following his departure from SUNY-Cortland, Nighman returned to his alma mater where he served as Director of Athletic Ticketing for nearly 20 years.
