Walter Teike

Tucson, AZ - Friday, August 13, 2021, at the age of 87, passed away after a full life.

He was predeceased by his parents Walter C. and Amalie Teike. Daughter Laura Coursey predeceased him in 2011.

Although he rarely talked about it, Walter was a veteran and served in the Korean War with the United States Navy.

Walter began his career in teaching and coaching at Mt. Clemens, Michigan. He also taught at Pittsford Central Schools, Bishop Kearney, Edison Tech, Aquinas, Spencerport Central Schools (the 1975 Spencerport Team were the New York State Wrestling team co-champions) Monroe Community College, East Rochester, Catalina Foothills and Canyon Del Oro. He was also an Assistant Coach for the USA Wrestling Team. In his later years he worked as the equipment manager for the Arizona State Basketball Team, was a wrestling referee and dance instructor in his community in Saddlebrook, Arizona. He was inducted into the Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1991.

Coach has moved on to the next level with his heavenly Father. He may be best remembered for his success coaching wrestling.

His favorite description of himself came from P.J. Cosmano, one of his students and wrestlers: "Mean, nasty, drilling, torturing, yelling. Only wrestlers really know him. Talking, helping, caring, kind, thoughtful "Walt".

He is survived by his son Louis Teike, daughter Darlene (Gary) Mascioletti, 4 grandsons, Daniel Scorse, Jeffrey Teike, William (Katie) Scorse, Stephen Scorse, 3 great-grandchildren and his beloved dog Molly.

A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, September 18, 2021 at 1:00 pm at Gospel Light Bible Baptist Church, 4393 Lyell Rd., Rochester, NY 14606. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
