Kyle Dake '13 Earns Third World Wrestling Championship

OSLO, Norway - Wrestling for his third world title on Sunday at the 2021 Senior World Wrestling Championships, Kyle Dake '13 did what he does best, win championships at multiple weight classes. A two-time champion at the non-Olympic weight of 79 kilograms, Dake defeated Tajmuraz Salkazanov of Slovakia by a score of 7-3 to earn the title at 74kg, his first at an Olympic weight.


Dake and Salkazanov exchanged step outs in the first period before Salkazanov took a 2-1 lead with a step out early in the second. A takedown midway through the second period gave Dake a 3-2 advantage. Dake extended his lead to 7-3 with 20 seconds to wrestle after stringing together a takedown and gut wrench, using his inside reach to score on Salkazanov.

Outscoring his opponents by a tally of 32-4 for the tournament, Dake reached the final after defeating Vasile Diacon (11-0), Fazli Eryilmaz (5-0) and Azamat Nurykau (9-1). Dake improves his senior level record to 110-18 overall and 56-2 over the last four years of competition dating back to the 2018 Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix.

Junior Yianni Diakomihalis was eliminated from medal contention at 65kg on Sunday morning, falling in his second round match to Vazgen Tevanyan (Armenia) by a score of 5-1. Diakomihalis had hopes of being pulled back into the competition via repechage, but Tevanyan was beaten in the quarterfinals. In round one, Diakomihalis defeated Colin Realbuto (Italy) by tech fall 10-0.

Cornell wrestling assistant coach Nick Gwiazdowski was defeated by Taha Akgul of Turkey in the 125kg bronze medal match, 6-4. Gwiazdowski was in on a number of shots late in the match, but Akgul successfully defended the positions.
