Sobotker pins No. 11 Sammy Alvarez, adds two more, Nolan wins three matches in season debut

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Binghamton wrestling team kicked off the 2021-22 season Sunday afternoon with a quad meet against Cleveland State, New Jersey City University and Rutgers. The Bearcats had one win on the afternoon, a 53-0 defeat of NJCU, but fell to Cleveland State 22-18 and Rutgers 34-9.

"We didn't have the team results that we were hoping for today," head coach Kyle Borshoff said. "There were individual performances to be happy about. It was nice to see Logan (Gumble) and Mike (Tyrrell) get their first career wins. Sobotker, Zarif, and Nolan had great days. There's plenty of things for us to be working on as we move forward to our next few matches."

Anthony Sobotker had a career day for Binghamton, registering three pins in as many matches. His final pin of the day came against No. 11 Sammy Alvarez of Rutgers.

"Sobotker looked outstanding today," Borshoff said. "He brought a lot of excitement to the day for our team. His pin over a very good Rutgers opponent was the obvious highlight of the day. Doing what he did in that match, in this environment takes a lot of heart, and he should be excited to build off this weekend performance."

Jacob Nolan also went 3-0 on the afternoon, picking up two decisions and a technical fall. Michael Zarif won all two of his matches, including a pin. True freshman Logan Gumble and Redshirt freshman Mike Tyrrell each picked their first career wins, with bonus points.

The Bearcats return home next weekend for the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open. Tournament begins at 9:30 a.m.
