Big Weekend Ahead for #15 Brockport at York & NCCC

The nationally-ranked No. 15 SUNY Brockport wrestling program hits the road for a pair of tournaments this weekend as the Golden Eagles travel to York College for the 12th annual New Standard Invitational and Niagara County Community College for the Thunderwolves Open. 15 Golden Eagles will travel to York College in York, Pennsylvania for a two-day tournament on Friday (3:30pm) and Saturday (9:30am). 14 Golden Eagles will travel to NCCC in Sanborn, NY for a one-day open on Saturday.

New Standard Invitational at York: The New Standard Invitational is a two-day tournament which will allow for the Golden Eagles to experience the type of long weekend that they will have to endure as the season progresses. The participating institutions include nationally-ranked No. 3 Stevens Institute of Technology, No. 10 Johnson & Wales, No. 12 The College of New Jersey, No. 21 Averett University, No. 23 Johns Hopkins University, Ithaca, Ursinus, Apprentice, Johns Hopkins, US Merchant Marine Academy, Washington & Lee, and host York.

Thunderwolves Open: Participating institutions at the Thunderwolves Open include Buffalo, Camden (NJ), Gannon University (PA), Garret College (MD), Henry Ford College (MI), Jamestown Community College, Mercyhurst (PA), Muskegon Community College (MI), Niagara Community College and St. Clair Community College (MI). The field will also include a host of unattached wrestlers.

In The National Spotlight: As a team, the Golden Eagles are ranked No. 15 nationally in the latest release of the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III Collegiate Rankings as of November 19th. Junior 125-pounder Matt Caccamise is currently ranked No. 1 nationally in the latest NWCA rankings. He is also ranked No. 3 nationally in his weight class by InterMat.com and No. 4 nationally by D3wrestle.com. Heavyweight Richard Knapp is ranked No. 7 nationally in the latest NWCA rankings as of November 19th. He is also listed in the contender category just outside of the top 10 in the latest D3wrestle.com national rankings in the 285-pound weight class. Marquis Larmond is listed in the honorable mention category of the D3wrestle.com national rankings in the 149-pound weight class.

Heading to York: Brockport's current lineup heading to York, Pennsylvania will be Matt Caccamise (125), Zach Levey (133), Marquis Larmond (149), Pedro Cruz (149), Austin Reed (149), Zack Brown (157), Max Yahre (157), Matthew Kline (165), Jonah Poueriet (165), Michael Sullivan (174), Jared Zenie (174), Chris Eames (184), Joe Benedict (197), Daryl Harris (197) and Richard Knapp (285).

Heading to NCCCC: Brockport's current lineup heading to the Thunderwolves Open is Isaiah Jackson (125), Francis Whitehouse (141), Matthew Cestare (149), Mahmoud Esa (149), Edwin Serrano (149), Max Ebanks (157), Michael Fronczak (157), Holt Reed (157), Sam Grey (165), Corey Snyder (174), Nick Franco (197), Justin Jones (197), Joe Yanis (197) and Anthony Oca (285).

Last Time Out: The SUNY Brockport wrestling team placed third at the New York State Collegiate Tournament hosted by SUNY Cortland on Saturday, Nov. 20th. Brockport's Richard Knapp took home first place in the heavyweight division, while Chris Eames placed second in the 184 pound weight class. Austin Reed (149), Zach Levey (133), and Joe Benedict (197) each placed third to help lead the way for the Golden Eagles. Knapp earned the top spot on the heavyweight podium as he won all four of his matches for the Golden Eagles. Eames placed second in the 184 pound weight class to earn 16.5 team points for Brockport. Levey placed third in the 133-pound weight class going 4-2 on the day to score 18.5 team points for Brockport. Austin Reed placed third in the 149 pound weight class as he earned four wins, advanced to the third place match due to a medical forfeit and eventually won by no contest over RIT's Mike Glynn in his final match. Reed totaled 16.5 points for Brockport on the day. Joe Benedict placed third at 197 in his first tournament of the season. He won three of his first four matches to earn a spot in the third-place match against RIT's Josh Harkless. Max Yahre placed fifth in the 157 pound weight class and totaled 14 points for Brockport.

Last Time at York: Brockport placed sixth in the team competition with a score of 64 points out of 15 teams the last time they traveled to the New Standard Invitational in 2019. Brockport has eight individual titles in the 11-year history of the New Standard Invite. Their highest team finish at the New Standard Tournament was a second-place finish back in 2011.

Coming Up: Brockport's home opener will take place on January 8th as the Golden Eagles host Niagara County Community College and New Jersey City University for a tri-match at 1 p.m.
