BUFFALO, NY - In a battle of two undefeated Mid-American Conference programs, the University at Buffalo wrestling team dropped a hard-fought 21-19 dual to Clarion at Alumni Arena on Thursday night.

The Bulls got off to a great start beginning with a 3-2 decision for Tristan Daugherty at 125. Daugherty trailed by two late in the third period but was able to get the reversal in the closing seconds to force overtime. After no one scored in the first overtime, Daugherty was awarded a stalling point in the second overtime and that was the difference in the match as he defeated Joey Fischer, 3-2.

Derek Spann cruised to a 13-0 major decision over Alex Blake at 133 to up the UB advantage to 7-0. Spann had two more four-point nearfalls as he closes in on the Bulls all-time record.

After Clarion won the next two matches to take a 9-7 lead, Ty Raines brought the crowd to its feet with the most exciting match of the night. Raines was trailing for nearly the entire match and it looked as if the redshirt-sophomore was going to lose a decision. However, Raines made a late move and was able to lift Kolby Ho, slam him on his back and get the pin with just 13 seconds left.

Clarion got a decision at 165 to cut the UB lead to 15-12. Jay Nivison stepped up and earned a 4-3 decision at 174. A third-period takedown by Nivison was the difference.

Pete Acciardi followed with a 5-4 decision over Max Wohlabaugh at 184. Trailing, 3-1, after the second period, Acciardi rallied with an escape and a takedown in the third period and his riding time point gave him the one-point win.

Unfortunately for the Bulls, Clarion won the last two matches, including one by fall to pull out the 21-19 victory.

The Bulls will next compete at the Southern Scuffle on January 1 in Chattanooga.
