BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo wrestling team swept Cleveland State and SIU-Edwardsville in a pair of Mid-American Conference duals at Alumni Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Bulls have now won seven of their last nine duals and improved to 4-1 in the MAC.

The Bulls pulled out a tight 19-17 victory over Cleveland State in the opener. UB jumped out to a 10-5 lead against the Vikings thanks to a forfeit awarded to Derek Spann at 133 and a Ben Freeman 9-1 major decision at 141.

From there, it was a back-and-forth affair. Hunter Shaut, making his season-debut, earned a 6-1 decision over Caleb Cass at 157. Jay Nivison held off Anthony Rice for a 7-4 decision at 174 to give the Bulls 16-11.

Cleveland State, the preseason pick to finish second in the MAC, won the next two matches to take a 17-16 lead heading into the heavyweight bout. Toby Cahill, who had been struggling with injuries in the weeks leading up to the dual, had his best match of the season. After a scoreless first period, the redshirt-senior got an escape and a takedown in the second period en route to a 3-1 decision, giving the Bulls the 19-17 victory.

It was a much easier win for the Bulls in their second dual as they defeated SIU-Edwardsville, 24-12.

Derek Spann set the tone with a first-period pin of Matt Malavsky. He needed only 2:04 to get the fall.

The Cougars tied the dual, 6-6, but the Bulls took control after that. UB won the next four matches, including one by forfeit at 165. John Arceri earned a 6-3 decision over Caleb Tyrus at 149. Hunter Shaut followed with his second win of the day, a 10-5 decision over Max Kristoff. Jay Nivison also had two wins on the day, defeating Kevin Gschwendtner, 5-3.

Sam Mitchell closed out the Bulls scoring with a 3-1 decision over Ryan Yarnell.

"It was a great day today," head coach John Stutzman said. "Our guys continue to improve and we're excited to be 4-1 in the MAC and 7-5 overall. This is one of the hardest working teams I have ever coached and we really like these guys."

The Bulls will next travel to LIU of a dual on Friday.
