Wrestling Names NWCA Scholar All-America Team; Four JCC Wrestlers Earn Individual Honors

MANHEIM, Pa. - Earlier this week, the National Wrestling Coaches Association announced the full slate of 2021-22 Scholar All-America Team and Individual honorees for the NJCAA Men's division with awards going to 73 individuals representing 22 institutions.

"On behalf of the NWCA Board of Directors, It is my honor to recognize these exceptional athletes and teams," NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer said. "Wrestling takes much focus and sacrifice and we are proud to honor these wrestlers for their obvious commitment to their academic pursuits!"

Of the 22 institutions that had representation and of the 51 schools that sponsor wrestling, the Jamestown Community College wrestling team finished fourth overall as a team with a GPA of 3.093, edging out Indian Hills Community College by .001.

Leading the way for the Jayhawks in the classroom is 133 pounder Brendon Ramsey (Panama, NY/Panama Central), 157 pounder Andrew Bungar (Hermitage, PA/Hickory HS), 174 pounder Ross Abram (Eden, NY/Eden Central), and 197 pounder Brock Johnson (Falconer, NY/Falconer HS) who have earn Scholar All-America honors.

Ramsey, a Physical Education major, finished his freshman season with an overall record of 9-15. Ramsey's season was highlighted by being the medalist at the Thunderwolves Open and qualifying for the 2022 NJCAA Wrestling National Championship.

"I'm very proud of our four Scholar All-Americans," said head coach Kris Schimek. "I am also very proud of the hard work the guys put into in finishing fourth in the country academically. Their hard work speaks to the culture that we have created here that school comes first for it is their future. Ramsey, Bungar, Abram, and Johnson should all be proud of this honor, as it is a testament to their hard work on and off the mat."

Bungar, an Individual Studies major, is now a two-time NWCA Scholar All-American who finished his second season as a Jayhawk with an overall record of 4-12. Bungar's season was highlighted by being the medalist at the Thunderwolves Open and qualifying for the 2022 NJCAA Wrestling National Championship.


Abram, a Liberal Arts major, finished his second season with an overall record of 20-6 and was a very successful season. Abram's accomplishments included being named to the NJCAA Region 3 All-Region Team, NJCAA Northeast District Champion, NJCAA Northeast District Most Outstanding Wrestler, and qualifying for the 2022 NJCAA Wrestling National Championship.

Johnson, a Criminal Justice major, finished his freshman season with an overall record of 14-13. Johnson's season was highlighted by named to the NJCAA Region 3 All-Region Team, NJCAA Northeast District Champion, and qualifying for the 2022 NJCAA Wrestling National Championship.

The quartet of Jayhawks wrestlers were the only representatives from Region 3 and the Northeast District.
