JWU Wrestling Captures Ithaca Invitational

The wrestling team captured the 2014 Ithaca Invitational over the weekend. The Wildcats finished the tournament with 164.5 points, defeating host Ithaca, the eighth ranked team in the NCAA Division III polls by 7.5 points. The Blue Bombers notched 158 points over the weekend.

The Wildcats took home several team and individual accolades over the weekend as the team led the tournament in pins scoring with a remarkable 25 pins over the course of the tournament. Freshman 133 pounder DJ Tirelli (Oradell, N.J.) earned the award for most pins in the least amount of time, scoring four pins in just six minutes and four seconds while notching a third place finish at his weight class. Sophomore Matt Caracappa (Freehold, N.J.) competed at 157 pounds over the weekend and notched three wins via pin fall, including the fastest pin of the tournament in just :21 seconds en route to a fourth place finish.

At 125 pounds, freshman Bobby Jordan (Woodbridge, N.J.) finished the tournament with a 5-1 record for a third place finish while sophomore Cody Beaudette (Cumberland, R.I.) notched a 4-2 record which was good for a fifth place finish. Senior 133 pounder Gideon Yim (Vernon Hills, Ill.) notched a fifth place finish at his weight class with a 3-2 record while senior All-American Michael Ferinde (Nutley, N.J.) notched a first place finish at 141 pounds with a perfect 4-0 record, including two wins via pin fall. Ferinde was joined at 141 pounds by sophomore Mike Stewart (Dracut, Mass.) who posted a 4-1 record to notch a third place finish. Returning junior national qualifier Joey Gaccione (Highpoint, N.J.) posted a 5-1 record at 149 pounds for a third place finish.

Senior Kenny Dougherty (Toms River, N.J.) led the way for the Wildcats at the upper weight classes, notching a second place finish at 174 pounds with a 3-1 record while sophomore Pete Hailer (East Milton, Mass.) also competed at 174 pounds and notched a 3-3 mark for a sixth place finish. At 184 pounds, junior Mike Labell (Stanhope, N.J.) went 3-2 for a fifth place finish while freshman Andrew Cavanna (Glastonbury, Conn.) had a fifth place finish at 197 pounds with a 3-2 record over the tournament.

The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, November 15th when they travel to the Roger Williams In Bristol, R.I. for the RWU Invitational, starting at 10:00 a.m.
