Brockport State Set to Start 2022-2023 Season in Ohio

Brockport, NY - The SUNY Brockport Wrestling program is set to begin their 2022-2023 season on the road this Saturday, November 5th at 10am in Alliance Ohio at the Mount Union Invitational.

Tradition of Excellence: The SUNY Brockport wrestling program is one of the most decorated programs in the history of Division III wrestling. Since their inception in 1963, the Golden Eagles have won five NCAA National Team titles, 27 Golden Eagles have won individual NCAA national titles and the program has produced 147 All-Americans.

2021-2022 Recap: Brockport sent two wrestlers to NCAA's last season and placed four wrestlers at regionals. Interim Head Coach Bill Jacoutot was named the NCAA Rookie Wrestling Coach of the Year following the season. The Golden Eagles were a fixture in the National Rankings for the first half of the season and finished the year with a 4-1 dual meet record. Brockport returns seven wrestlers who competed at nationals last year including Matt Caccamise, Elijah Sims, Marquis Larmond, Matthew Kline, Jared Zenie, Chris Eames and Nick Franco. Team highlights included a thred palce finish at the Mount Union Invite, a second place finish at the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference Championships and a second place finish at the John Summa Invitational.

All-American Hopefuls: Brockport returns two individuals in Elijah Sims and Matt Caccamise who have qualified for NCAA's in previous years. Nationally ranked Matt Caccamise will move up to 133 this season following three consecutive NCAA qualifications at 125. Caccamise won the region last season and went 1-2 at nationals, finishing the year with a 20-4 overall record. Elijah Sims won the region at 141 back in 2021 before the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the Golden Eagles NCAA dreams. Sims returns this season slotted for the 149-pound weight class and looks to return to form after posting a 10-4 record last season.

The Recco Era Begins: Head Coach Sam Recco was hired in September to take over the reins of Brockport's storied wrestling program. Recco, originally from Lyndonville, NY, spent the last year as an assistant coach at his alma mater of Edinboro University (Division I wrestling) where he helped guide 141-pounder Gabe Willochell to an NCAA Championship appearance. He also led multiple student-athletes to podium finishes at the MAC Conference Championships. From 2019-2021 he was an assistant coach for men's and women's wrestling at Lincoln College where he gained valuable experience in building their women's program from the ground up. While at Lincoln, he helped coach an NAIA National qualifier and multiple conference place winners. Prior to his time at Lincoln, he was an assistant coach at General McLane High School where he mentored multiple Pennsylvania State qualifiers and podium finishers.

Recco Brings on Silvis as Assistant Coach: Mike Silvis was recently hired as an assistant coach for the Brockport wrestling program. Most recently, Silvis was the head coach for the Holley-Kendall High School wrestling team in 2019-20 and he was the top assistant coach for the same program in 2018-19. He spent four seasons on the mat as a Division I wrestler for the University at Buffalo (2013-17). He attended Holley High School and was a two-time New York State Tournament place finisher, including a third-place finish at states in 2013.

Schedule Layout: Following the invitational in Ohio, the men will be traveling to SUNY Oswego for their first SUNYAC Dual of the season. The team returns to Oswego a week later, November 19th for the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference Championships. The men will finish out the fall semester with a two-day invitational in York Pennsylvania and then one more Dual on the road against Alfred State.

The Team will start the second half of their season in New York City at Hunter College, January 7th. On January 14th the team will travel to Allentown Pennsylvania to wrestle at Muhlenberg College. The team then returns to Rochester to take wrestle at the New York State Intercollegiate Open, before traveling the following weekend to compete in Massachusetts against Worcester Polytechnic Institute. They then return to New York to compete against Jamestown Community College.

The team will be home for the first time on Wednesday, February 1st to take on Rochester opponent RIT. The men then travel once again to Ohio to face Baldwin Wallace University on February 4th before returning to host the Brockport Tri-Match against Lycoming college and Niagara County Community.

After this the Men will take on the NCAA Regional tournament.

Returning to The Nest: Chris Eames placed fifth in the 174-pound weight class for the second straight season at regionals for Brockport. He won the fifth-place match by the score of 12-6 over RIT's Colby Giroux to score 9.0 team points for the Golden Eagles. He finished the weekend with a 3-2 record and finished the year with a 19-8 overall record. Marquis Larmond placed eighth in the 149-pound weight class in his first collegiate regional appearance. He went 2-3 on the weekend for Brockport and scored 5.5 team points and had an overall season record of 19-10. Also returning for the Golden Eagles is Eli Sims and Jared Zenie. Sims finished his 2021-2022 season with an overall record of 10-4 after wrestling at in the 141- pound weight class at NCAA Regionals. Zenie wrestled in the 174- weight class at NCAA Regionals and finished the season with an overall record of 12-15.

Also returning to the mat for the Golden Eagles for the 2022-2023 season is Nick Franco, Joe Yanis, Karam Ali, Matthew Cestare, Max Ebanks, Mahmoud Esa, Alexander Fronczak, Michael Fronczak, Sam Grey, Jaleel Herrar, Isaish Jackson, Matthew Kline, Boaz Smart, Michael Sullivan, Elvis Vasquez, and Francis Whitehouse.

New to The Crew: The Wrestling Program welcomes one junior and six freshmen to the team this fall. Casey Cooper will be wrestling in the 184-pound weight class. Liam Bullock is joining from Chester Academy, New York and will be wrestling in the 125-pound weight class. Another wrestler from down-state, Spencer Maja will be wrestling in the 133-pound weight class as well as Gavin McLaughlin in the 174-pound weight class. Joshua Fernandes will be wrestling for the 149-pound weight class and Jaden Friel will be competing in the 141-pound weight class. Charles Loucks will be wrestling 149 for the season.
