DePrez brothers shine, Bearcats win seven bouts

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Binghamton wrestling (1-3) cruised to their first win of the season against Buffalo (2-6) at Alumni Arena on Sunday night. Binghamton started the dual strong, winning three of the first four bouts to take a 9-3 lead. The Bearcats made a statement at the end of the match by winning four of the last five bouts. With the win, Binghamton got revenge against the Bulls after Buffalo won last season's dual by one point.
Highlights

Kicking off the evening at 125 pounds, Micah Roes scored two first period takedowns to defeat Patrick Adams, 5-1 for his first win of the season. Roes accumulated over three minutes of riding time in the bout.

At 141 pounds, Nate Lucier won his second straight dual match of the season with a 3-2 decision against Matt Ryan. Lucier scored first with a single-leg takedown in the first period. The match was tied at 2-2 going into the third period, but Lucier quickly escaped early in third period to take a 3-2 lead. Lucier successfully defended multiple attempts from Ryan late in the period to secure the victory.

Michael Zarif won his third dual of the season at 149 pounds. Zarif prevailed 3-2 over Kaleb Burgess in a hard-fought battle. The bout was scoreless going into the the second period. Burgess accumulated 1:55 of riding time, but Zarif's relentless effort allowed him to escape on the edge of the mat with five seconds remaining in the second period to take a 1-0 lead. With the match technically tied at 1-1, Zarif's perseverance paid off late in the third period. Zarif scored a takedown with :40 remaining in the third, and he kept control of Burgess in the final seconds to prevail with the victory.

At 165 pounds, Will Ebert held on for a 6-5 decision win in a wild encounter with Ty Raines. Ebert controlled the early stages of the bout by scoring takedowns in the first and second periods to take a 4-2 lead into the final period. Ebert secured the riding time point with 1:23 left in the third period, but the match got very interesting down the stretch. Late in the third period, Raines tied the match at 4-4 with a reversal, he intentionally allowed Ebert to escape and allowed him to regain a 5-4 lead. Ebert was called for stalling as the final buzzer went off, which allowed Raines to tie the match at 5-5. Officials reviewed the call, and the stalling call on the mat stood, but Ebert went on to win the match because of the riding time point he secured earlier in the third period.

Sam DePrez made his first start of the season at 174 pounds, and he did not disappoint. DePrez won 2-0 against No. 28 Jay Nivison. DePrez displayed superb top control and racked up two minutes of riding time in the second period. An early escape in the third period gave DePrez a 1-0 lead, and he neutralized any attempt that Nivison tried in the third period. DePrez secured the additional riding time point, and his second win over a ranked opponent this season.

No. 7 Lou DePrez scored six takedowns en route to an 18-5 major decision win over Eli Sherren at 197 pounds. DePrez is now 4-0 on the season.

Cory Day improved to 4-0 in duals this season with a 5-0 decision win over Greg Hodulick in the final bout of the evening at heavyweight. It was a homecoming match for the redshirt junior. Day wrestled at Iroquois High School in Elma, which is a short drive from Buffalo.

"Great team effort today," said head coach Kyle Borshoff. "It's obvious our previous three duals prepared us for tonight. Big shout out to Sam DePrez on his second nationally ranked win of the season. Our young guys wrestled great tonight, and they keep getting better every match. Our older guys continue to get the job done under pressure. I am looking forward to next weekend."

Binghamton will wrestle in the Garden State Grapple at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. The event showcases four teams from the EIWA and the Big 10. The Bearcats will take on Michigan State at 2 p.m. and Indiana at 4 p.m.
