Bulls Mount Epic Comeback to Defeat SIU-Edwardsville, 18-16

BUFFALO, NY - Things looked bleak for the University at Buffalo wrestling team as it fell behind SIU-Edwardsville, 13-0, on Sunday afternoon at First Community Arena. However, the Bulls won five of the last six matches, including a pin by Greg Hodulick in the final bout, to cap an epic comeback and defeat the Cougars, 18-16.

Michael Petite got the Bulls going with an 8-6 decision over Alec Paralta at 157 to cut the lead to 13-3. The Bulls got three more points at 174 when Jay Nivison earned a sudden victory over Chase Diehl. With the match tied, 1-1, Nivison earned a takedown, late in overtime, to earn the 3-1 win.

Giuseppe Hoose was up next and earned a 9-4 decision over Sergio Villalobos at 184 to cut the Cougars lead to 16-9. Sam Mitchell followed with a 4-2 decision over Ryan Yarnell to cut the lead to 16-12 and set the stage for the final heavyweight bout.

Hodulick stepped on the mat in search of his first career MAC dual win. He jumped out to 10-3 lead in the third period over Dan McKiernan. But in order for the Bulls to pull out the victory, they would need bonus points. Hodulick responded by turning McKiernan and getting the pin with just 2.7 seconds left on the clock. It turned a 16-12 deficit into an 18-16 victory.

"Congratulations to Greg Hodulick," head coach John Stutzman said. "We came out slow but found a way. This is a hard place to travel and win."


It was Buffalo's third straight win and improved the Bulls to 2-0 in the MAC. UB is back in action at Pittsburgh on Friday.
