Oneonta Wrestling Outlasts Lakers

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- In a dual that came down to the end, the SUNY Oneonta wrestling team defeated Oswego State, 21-18, in their first home match of the season, Wednesday evening. The dual went into the 285 lbs. match tied, where senior Jacob Pine (Hoosick Falls/Hoosick Falls) won via decision to secure the Red Dragons victory. Senior Ryan Meisner (Lindenhurst/Lindenhurst) and sophomore Danny Poggi (West Islip/West Islip) each recorded a pin as Oneonta improved to 7-9 on the season in dual matches.

Poggi started the match off pinning John Vicario in 2:06 at 125 lbs., while Meisner later pinned Steven Felice in 1:09 at 165 lbs. With the dual match tied at 18, Pine defeated Anthony Vasquez in a 6-0 decision at 285 lbs.

Senior Michael Blando (Massapequa/Massapequa) battled at 141 lbs. for a 9-7 decision win over Kaleb Carreon. Blando worked his way to an early 6-0 lead after the first period with a takedown and four-point nearfall. Carreon clawed back and gave himself a 7-6 lead, however Blando scored a reversal with 30 seconds remaining and gained an extra point for riding time.

Freshman Jack Ryan (Trumbull, CT) at 184 lbs., had a couple takedowns in his 7-3 decision win over Lakers Bryce Smith.

The Red Dragons are back in action Saturday when they host RIT and Penn College in the Dragons Duals at 11 a.m.
