Arujau Wins Spotlight Match To Highlight Dual Meet Finale vs. #8 Ohio State
February 18, 2023

TAMPA, Fla. -- Vito Arujau controlled his match against a top 10 opponent in the spotlight match, but Ohio State was able to grab a 22-14 dual meet win over fourth-ranked Cornell on Saturday afternoon in the FloDuals at the Tampa Convention Center. The Big Red heads into the EIWA championships in two weeks battle-tested after a 12-3 dual meet record that included a 42nd Ivy League title.

Arujau, ranked no. 3 at 133 pounds, defeated freshman Jesse Mendez, ranked No. 8 nationally, by a 6-1 margin. The senior earned the lone two takedowns, adding an escape point and riding time to improve to 16-1 on the year.

Wrestling without the services of three-time NCAA champ Yianni Diakomihalis (149) and nationally-ranked Vince Cornella (141) and Chris Foca (174), the final tuneup for the EIWA championship saw Big Red staples Arujau, Julian Ramirez and Cardenas each pick up wins heading into Easterns.

Other Big Red victors on the day included eighth-ranked Ramirez at 165 pounds. After the Buckeyes jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the team score, Ramirez earned a 16-1 technical fall over Klay Reeves to get the Big Red on the board. A pair of four-point near-fall turns highlighted the decisive win. Cardenas, slotted at No. 15 at 197 pounds, picked up a 7-1 win over Luke Geog. Christian Hansen picked up his first career dual meet win with a 6-4, sudden victory at 174 pounds over Isaac Wilcox.
