Section V Hall of Famer Ernie DiBella passes away at age 73

Ernest J. DiBella

South Bristol - Ernest J. DiBella, age 73, passed away Wednesday, November 15, 2023, after a long illness. He is survived by his daughter, Lindsay (Mike) Nicholson; two grandchildren, William and Camden; companion, Elsa Filiey. He was predeceased by his daughter, Nicole DiBella in 2020; and brother, Gary DiBella.

Ernie was the son of John and Katherine (DiNicola) DiBella. He was raised in Pittsford and attended Pittsford schools. Ernie was a graduate of Pittsford High School, where he was a standout wrestler and football player. He was a New York State high school wrestling champion in 1969. Ernie obtained a bachelor's degree in education from Westchester University, where he was also a successful wrestler. He won three Mid Atlantic conference titles and was a national qualifier. Ernie obtained his master?s degree in education from Nazareth College.

He taught physical education and driver education in the Pittsford School District, for 37 years, retiring in 2010. Ernie also coached wrestling, football and golf, while at Pittsford. After retirement, he was a volunteer assistant wrestling coach at SUNY Brockport. In 1997, Ernie was inducted into the New York State Section 5 Wrestling Hall of Fame. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, woodworking and winemaking.


Friends may call Saturday, December 2, from 2-4pm, at Johnson-Kennedy Funeral Home, Inc., 47 N. Main St., Canandaigua.
