The search for missing RIT student Matthew Grant has now extended beyond New York state, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

Grant's family has traveled from Onaway, Michigan to the Rochester area to search for him. They said Grant left his phone at home when he left the area around 10 p.m. Monday night and headed east.

His car was last tracked to a Thruway exit in Syracuse on Monday.

"We don't know if he went north or south from there, but he had exited at 36, is where his license plate was picked up at," said Mark Grant, Matthew's father.

He had supposedly been talking about wanting to venture out of Rochester and explore the outdoors, and his family found he had searched maps of the Adirondacks, Appalachian Trail and other areas the night he left home.

However, they said it would be abnormal for him to leave town for so long without letting anyone know.

"He has never gone missing like this," said Maggie Grant, Matthew's sister. "It is very uncharacteristic of him, so that is why we believe that he does not know what is going on."

Grant is a co-captain of the RIT wrestling team. His family said the night he went missing, the fourth-year student went to practice and nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

"We look at every angle," Mark said. "Personally, he seemed to be doing very well, academically he was fine, athletically it was going well. He was voted in as team captain this year, so a lot of things were going well in his life, most everything."
