BOILING SPRINGS, NC - The University at Buffalo wrestling team took two out of three duals at Gardner-Webb on Saturday. The Bulls opened the day by beating Kent State, 25-15, to improve to 1-0 in the MAC. After dropping a dual to Chattanooga, UB rebounded to beat host Gardner-Webb, 20-17.

In the opener, the Bulls cruised to a 25-15 win over Kent State. The Bulls won seven of the 10 matches against the Golden Flashes.

Max Elton (125) and Tommy Maddox (133) opened the scoring with decisions. Nick Stampoulos extended the UB lead to 12-4 with a first-period pin of Kaden Setzer at 149.

The Bulls followed with four straight wins by Ty Raines (major decision at 157), Hunter Shaut (decision at 165), Jay Nivison (decision at 174) and Chase Kranitz (decision at 184).

The Bulls stumbled against Chattanooga, 27-12, but did get three wins. Raines and Mitchell earned decisions and Kranitz won by tech fall.

Maddox sparked the Bulls to a victory against Gardner-Webb. After the Bulls were tech falled at 125, Maddox gave UB the lead with a pin of Tyson Lane early in the second period.

The middle of the lineup took control of the dual. Stampoulos won a decision at 149 over nationally ranked Zach Price; Raines won a decision at 157 and Shaut won by tech fall at 165.

After Gardner-Webb rallied to win the next two matches, Mitchell put the dual on ice with a 9-4 decision at 197.

"Those were three tough matches," head coach John Stutzman said. "I am so proud of this team. We're getting better and better. Leaving here 2-1 is important. This team is a tight-knit group.

The Bulls are back in action on Thursday when they host Michigan State at the UB Center for the Arts.
