Ithaca Wrestling Finishes Seventh at the 14th Annual York (Pa.) New Standard Invitational
December 02, 2023

YORK, Pa. - The Ithaca College wrestling team took a trip to Pennsylvania for the 14th Annual New Standard Corporation Invite. The two-day tournament had more competition than usual with York College hosting 15 schools. Your very own Ithaca Bombers came into the tournament with a boosted rank of #16 in the country. The most recent National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) rankings saw IC move up seven spots. Other notable ranked schools attending was No. 7 Johnson & Wales, Tied No. 12 TCNJ, Tied No. 25 Stevens Institute of Technology, and previously ranked Washington and Lee University.

Ithaca ended the tournament in the top half without some key wrestlers who have gotten the starting nod in their career. That long list of unentered wrestlers include 141 lb. Matt Haycook, 157 Wenchard Pierre-Louis, 184 Xavier Pommells, and 197 Ryan Galka. Despite missing half of the "starting" lineup, the Bombers did find success on the mat.

133 Isaias Torres- Sixth Place
Torres grinded his way to the semifinals before having to medical forfeit out. He was on a tear racking up two tech falls outscoring his opponents 35-3 and a first period fall in the quarterfinals while up 7-0. The place won doesn't show how impressive Torres looked.

149 Matthew Beyer
Beyer was the top seed at 149 pounds and won three matches during the first day of the tournament, two of them by pin and one by tech fall as he was dynamite during the matchup against the No. 15 ranked wrestler in the country scoring an 18-2 victory. He unfortunately needed to medical forfeit from the tournament prior to the quarterfinals. Regardless he wrestled extremely well going 3-0 at the New Standard Invite earning the team bonus points in each of his three matches, and the likelihood of him winning the tournament were high had he been able to continue.

165 Konrad Parker- Fifth Place
Parker continued his placing streak on the season. His first three wins Parker outscored his opponents 3-1 including a fall. His first loss came in the semifinals where he ran into the eventual champ and one of the top wrestlers in the country. Parker battled in the consolations, but just came up short in a heartbreaking 11-7 decision loss to fall in the fifth-place match.

174 Jackson Gray- Runner-Up
Gray's defense looked impenetrable until the finals. He went three matches- round of 16, quarters, and semis- without giving up a takedown. With the new rule change to a three-point takedown, Gray is looking to shake up a few brackets in the future. His style is a perfect concoction for an upset.

285 Jeremy Mazzella- Fourth Place
Mazzella had three bonus point victories including two falls. His championship bracket loss came from the champion Reid Garrison representing the Marine Merchant Academy whom went on to upset No. 6 Peter Wersinger from TCNJ the very next round. Mazzella met up with #6 Wersinger in the third-place match. The Bomber scores a ton of points in his victories, but Wesinger is known for his defense. In the end, he put together a strong performance but dropped 7-1 decision to end up in fourth-place.

The Ithaca College wrestling team will travel back to Pennsylvania for their next competition in two weeks. The Bombers will finish finals week then enter break traveling to Messiah College for the Chocolate Duals. Wrestling is planned to start at 9 a.m. with the dual opponents to be released the week of the competition.
