St. John Fisher Wrestling Sweeps Red Dragon Duals

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University wrestling team traveled to SUNY Cortland for the Red Dragon duals and the Cardinals faced off against the host Cortland, along with SUNY Brockport and Alfred State. Fisher defeated all three opponents to go 3-0 on the day.

Fisher 45 - Brockport 6
The Cardinals kicked off the day by winning every match except one against the Golden Eagles. Daniel Parkulo began with a win by forfeit in the 125 and then the wrestling began. Derek Bernardino earned a 9-6 decision in the 133-pound class before Alex Samson pinned his opponent at 1:56 in the 141. Joshua Maslyn (149lb), Paul Lichter (157lb) and Otto Davidson (165lb) each won by major decision. Maslyn earned the win 14-1, followed by Lichter's 8-0 and Davidson concluded with a 19-10 final.

Michael Watts got the team back in the win column with a pin at 1:21 in the 184-pound match, and that was followed with an even more impressive pin by Braydon Vandenberg at 0:53 in the 197. Jackson Burns wrapped up the match with a pin of his own, this time in 3:44 for the 285 class.

Fisher 27 - Alfred State 16
Parkulo had his chance to wrestle against Alfred State and was impressive with a 10-4 victory by decision. After dropping the 133 pound bout, the Cardinals bounced back with three straight wins. Samson earned a 9-3 decision, followed by a Maslyn 7-2 win by decision and a pin at 1:59 by Lichter. Ryleigh Duryee earned an important win in the 174-pound bout, pinning his opponent in 6:58. Burns secured the victory for the team with a pin at 6:04.

Fisher 27 - Cortland 20
The Cardinals jumped in front after a tight 1-0 win by decision for Parkulo. Samson, Maslyn and Lichter each won their matches to put Fisher in front by a score of 15-6. The Red Dragons answered by winning three straight matches to jump ahead 20-15. Vandenberg earned a victory by pin in 2:00 to put the Cardinals back in front, and it was Burns in the 285 pound bout that secured the win with a pinfall victory in 6:13.



The wrestling teams earns a much need break. They are back in action on Wednesday, January 10 when they host Elmira College and Utica University at home.
