Cornell Takes Two Of Three At National Collegiate Duals

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The No. 5 Cornell wrestling team won two of its three duals Monday at the National Collegiate Duals, beating Little Rock 32-8 and No. 13 Pittsburgh 27-13 before falling to No. 6 Iowa State 26-15 at Montgomery Bell Academy. The Big Red moved to 3-1 in duals this season at the event.

Top Notes and Highlights

Three-time All-American and 2023 national champion Vito Arujau (133) returned to Cornell's lineup for the first time since the Journeymen Classic in early November. The senior defeated No. 21 Nasir Bailey (Little Rock) 4-0 by decision and No. 23 Vinny Santaniello (Pitt) 19-4 by technical fall.

Ethan Fernandez (149) had the most impressive win in Cornell's first dual of the day against Little Rock. The junior fell behind 7-0 and 9-4 against Kyle Dutton before rallying to take the lead and winning 14-13 by decision.

Sophomore Vince Cornella (141) picked up a ranked win over No. 15 Cole Matthews, winning 8-2 by decision. Matthews came into the event off an upset of No. 3 Jesse Mendez (Ohio State).

Junior Julian Ramirez (165) continued his strong start to the season, winning both of his matches to improve to 10-1 overall. Against Pitt, he beat No. 8 Holden Heller 11-1 by major decision.

Senior Chris Foca (184) picked up two ranked victories, with one coming against a top-five wrestler at 184. He beat No. 14 Reece Heller (Pitt) 18-1 by technical fall and No. 5 Will Feldkamp, a two-time national qualifier, 8-7 by decision.

Senior Jacob Cardenas (197) beat No. 13 Stephen Little (Little Rock), No. 17 Mac Stout (Pitt) and McCrae Haggerty as part of a perfect 3-0 performance.

Junior Greg Diakomihalis (125) trailed No. 22 Kysen Terukina 9-8 (Iowa State) in the final minute before recording a three-point takedown and a pin to secure an exhilarating victory. It was his first collegiate win over a ranked opponent.

Cornell won four matches by fall, three by technical fall and two by major decision over the three duals.

Cornell won eight of 10 matches against Little Rock and seven of 10 against Pitt. Six of the Big Red's victories in the latter dual came against ranked wrestlers.
