Jamestown Public Schools adopts "Red & Green" as new Jamestown High School Nickname
January 09, 2024

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. - The Jamestown Public Schools Board of Education has adopted a new nickname for Jamestown High School - "Red & Green" following a recommendation from the school's Nickname Committee. The new nickname was adopted during the board's regular meeting on Jan. 9.

"Red & Green" - the school's longtime colors - was the high school's first known nickname from 1905-1935 prior to the introduction of the "big cat" logo first seen in the 1940s. "Red & Green" also served as the longtime name of the JHS annual yearbook. The nickname will accompany the "big cat" mascot and logo that was adopted in 2022.

"Following feedback forms and discussions with students and members of the community, the JHS Nickname Committee made the recommendation to continue a return to our roots," said Ben Drake, JHS Athletic Director. "With the selection of 'Red & Green' as a nickname to accompany our original 'Big Cat' mascot we are pleased to continue the tradition of excellence that has always accompanied the students of Jamestown High School."

Following new requirements from the New York State Education Department released in early March of 2023, Jamestown Public Schools began the process of changing the JHS nickname last spring. "Red & Green" will be phased in beginning later this spring.
