Cardinals Defeat Utica and Elmira In Home Tri-Meet

PITTSFORD, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University wrestling team were at home for the first time on Wednesday to host Utica University and Elmira College in the Cardinal Tri-Meet. Fisher was able to secure wins in both duals on the day to remain undefeated at 5-0.

After jumping ahead thanks to two forfeits, Luke Yorke wrestled in the 141-weight class and earned a 9-4 decision. Torin Bishop made quick work of his opponent at 149-pounds, securing a pin in under one minute. Jeremy Devine (165) and Braydon Vandenberg (197) each earned victories via technical fall, Devine doing it at 4:30 and Vandenberg securing the points in just 1:31. Paul Lichter earned the victor in the 157-pound bout by way of a 16-5 major decision.

The momentum looked like it was going to continue after Daniel Parkulo earned a 12-3 major decision victory. However, the Cardinals dropped matches in the 133-pound and 149-pound matches to fall behind 10-7. Fisher got back to work with Devine earning an impressive 15-0 technical fall at the 7:00 mark. Vandenberg added another technical fall victory to his resume, winning 23-5 with just under two minutes to go in the first period. Ryleigh Duryee and Nathan Coon each earned wins as well. Duryee did so by way of a 11-0 major decision in the 174-pound match, and Coon followed with a pin at 2:10 in the 184-pound bout.

The Cardinals are back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 17 when they take on Penn State Behrend at home. The wrestling team will honor their seniors prior to the competition.
