Bulls Drop Close Dual to Northern Illinois, 18-16

BUFFALO, NY - It was a battle of the Mid-American Conference West Division leaders on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena. Unfortunately, in a back-and-forth dual, it was Northern Illinois that came out on top, 18-16, over Buffalo to clinch the West Division title.

Trailing 5-0, Tommy Maddox got the Bulls on the board at 133 with his best performance of the season. The redshirt-senior earned a 17-9 major decision over Michael Kaminski to pull the Bulls to within one, 5-4.

After the Huskies won decisions in the next two to extend their lead to 11-4, the Bulls got on a role and won three straight matches.

An under-the-weather Nick Stampoulos got takedowns in the first and second period en route to a 7-2 decision over Brett Smith at 157.

Hunter Shaut followed in the 165 bout with a 4-2 decision over Tommy Bennett. Shaut's second-period takedown was the difference in the match.

Jay Nivison got a takedown in the second and a takedown in the third to dispose of Ricardo Salinas, 7-3, and put the Bulls ahead in the dual, 14-13.

After dropping a match at 184 to give the lead back to NIU, the Bulls quickly regained the overall advantage, 16-14, when Sam Mitchell earned a 4-1 decision at 197.

Unfortunately for the Bulls, Northern Illinois was able to win the final match of the day which gave the Huskies the dual win as well.

"We fought hard," head coach John Stutzman said. "We split the five matches. I'm proud of this team and their effort."

The Bulls will be back in action on Senior Night when they host Clarion on Thursday at 7 pm.
