R-H's Sims wins Section V wrestling title; Spencerport and Hilton are team champions
February 04, 2018

Elijah Sims had a plan, and that plan included making it back to the state wrestling tournament last year. Nothing odd about that considering that's usually how every wrestler who makes states thinks.

Sims even thought he might improve upon his performance.

Well, a not so funny thing happened to Sims. The Rush-Henrietta lightweight finished in a tie for a wild-card position at states in the points system.

"He missed a wild card right down to the final criteria," Rush-Henrietta coach Mickey Marlowe said.

Good thing for Sims, a senior this winter, he had another chance to work his way back to the state championships. Sims kept himself in the running Saturday night by winning the 126-pound Section V Class AA tournament final at Gates Chili.

Champions again

The Spencerport Rangers took home a Section V trophy for the first time in six years,

Spencerport scored 275.5 points, 30 more than runner-up Webster Thomas, while Monroe County league rival Brockport came in third with 229.
