Tigers improve to 10-2 in 2018-19; one win shy of single-season school mark

WILKES BARRE, PA - The No. 21 RIT wrestling team improved to 10-2 in 2018-19 after winning two of three dual matches at the John Reese Duals, hosted by Wilkes University Sunday. RIT knocked off Scranton (7-6), 37-10, before suffering a tough 21-19 defeat to No. 13 The College of New Jersey (13-1), 21-19. The Tigers rebounded by defeating Keystone (4-18), 50-3.

Kaidon Winters (Athens, PA/Athens Area) (157 lbs.), Dempsey King (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) (165 lbs.), Joe Cutugno (Ventnor, NJ/Atlantic City) (184 lbs.) and Connor Calkins (Almond, NY/Alfred-Almond) (285 lbs.) all went undefeated on the day for the Tigers. Winters, who is ranked third nationally at 157 lbs., improved to 25-0 in 2018-19 with 13 pins. King, ranked eighth at 165 lbs. is now 20-4, while Cutugno moved 19-5. Calkins moved into second on the Tigers in wins this season with 21 after two victories.

RIT won eight of 10 matches in the victory over Scranton. Winters picked up his 13th fall of the season, while Cutugno earned a win by technical fall. Isaiah Ocasio (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) (141 lbs.) and King garnered victories by major decision.

The Tigers found themselves down 18-0 after the first four matches against The College of New Jersey before embarking on a furious rally, winning five of the final six bouts. Winters picked up a win by medical forfeit before King won by major decision. After Dan Kilroy, ranked eighth nationally for TCNJ extended their lead to 21-9, Cutugno, Joe Lupisella (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) and Calkins all won tight matches for the Tigers.

RIT breezed to the win over Keystone, as six matches were decided by forfeit. Shane Murphy (Mt. Olive, NJ/Mt. Olive) and Owen Albanese (Canastota, NY/Canastota) picked up wins, while King earned a victory by pin.

RIT's 10 dual wins are now tied for the second most in one season in program history, matching the 1953-54 squad that went 10-0. That team was inducted into the RIT Sports Hall of Fame in 2016. RIT needs one more win and two to surpass the 1958-59 team that won 11 dual matches.

RIT is off next weekend. The Tigers return to action on Sunday, Feb. 10 as they host Pennsylvania College of Technology and Alfred State College in the Tiger Duals from Clark Gym.
