Mercogliano: Don't let biting incident overshadow great weekend of high school wrestling
February 26, 2019

The 2019 New York State wrestling championships will be remembered for many great stories and accomplishments.

There were dominant performances from nationally ranked wrestlers such as Hilton's Greg Diakomihalis, Eastport-South Manor's Adam Busiello, and the pride of Section 1, New Rochelle's Jake Logan.

There were more than a few notable upsets, too, and a promising seventh-grader in Minisink Valley's Zack Ryder came within one point of pushing Shenendehowa's Stevo Poulin, ranked No. 2 in the country at 106 pounds, to overtime.

The list could go on, but due to an unfortunate set of circumstances, much of the talk since the memorable weekend has centered around the controversial ending to the 182-pound final in Division II.
