Gunning's Withdrawal from NCAAs Caps Stellar Career

PITTSBURGH, PA - Due to an injury, University at Buffalo wrestler Jake Gunning has withdrawn from the NCAA Championships, bringing an end to his stellar career.

"It's unfortunate that Jake is unable to compete this weekend," head coach John Stutzman said. "He has had a great career and leaves as one of the best big men in UB history. I am proud to have coached him and excited for his future."

Gunning will be remembered as one of the best heavyweights to ever wrestle at UB. The Pennsylvania native finished his career with 72 overall wins. His 50 career dual wins are the most ever by a UB heavyweight. He ranks fourth in school history in career dual wins, only two shy of the school record.

Gunning's best season came in 2016-17 when he won the MAC Championship. He is the only Buffalo heavyweight to be a three-time national qualifier.

The NCAA Championships begin on Thursday at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh. The Bulls will have five other wrestlers competing.
