THANK YOU FOR SERVICE: Deployment causes Batavia's Stewart to miss son's title win; Devils' wrestling coach serves in National Guard

BATAVIA — Last season, then Batavia seventh grader Casper Stewart pinned Spencerport's Sean Cullen to take home the 99-pound Class A title with his father, Batavia/Attica co-coach Rick Stewart by his side.

This season things were much more difficult for the two Stewart's, as for the elder Stewart, when his son picked up a second consecutive title with a close 6-5 decision over Spencerport's Seth Russo in last weekend's 113 pound Class A2 final, he had to watch from Texas where the Blue Devils' longtime head coach is currently serving as a member of the Army National Guard.

Stewart, a Senior Maintenance Officer in the 42nd Infantry Division, was deployed to Texas where he will remain until March when he heads off to Kuwait where he will remain until later in 2020. When state side he runs a maintenance shop for the National Guard, but was deployed mid-season and will return in November of this year, just in time for next wrestling season - his son's freshman year.
