ARTIE WEIDLER WINS NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP
Golden Eagles in sixth place during Saturday's events

DUBUQUE, IA -- Senior Artie Weidler (Patchogue/Patchogue) is the 2004 NCAA Division III Wrestling Champion for the 165 weight class. Weidler defeated Luther's Garrett South, the #3 seed, in the 165 championship, 5-3 OT.

Weidler, the top seed at 165, has brought SUNY Brockport its first individual wrestling national title since Lenny Baker and Frank Palumbo won individual titles in 2001. Weidler becomes the 27th individual champion in SUNY Brockport wrestling history. Weidler won in the semifinals earlier today over Pat Wilsbacher of Buena Vista, 12-7.

"I couldn't believe it," said Weidler after the victory. "I just kept saying in my head, 'you can't let this slip away, it is the last match you will ever wrestle in college.' I think now I'm just going to sit in the car with a smile on my face and enjoy this high for the rest of the night."

Three time national qualifier Dan Roberts (Bellport/Bellport) was a victor in the fourth round of the 141 consolations, defeating Jason Chase of Cortland, 10-2. But Roberts, seeded #6, lost to Jeff Patzke of Luther in the consolation quarters, 12-8, to complete his season.

Robert Cuffie (Bay Shore/Brentwood), the number three seed at 197, lost to #2 Yan White of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the semifinals, by fall at 4:59. Cuffie stayed alive with a 7-4 win over Wyatt Reyerson of Luther in the consolation semifinals. Cuffie then lost to Andrew Helms of Delaware University in the finals, 3-2, for a fourth place finish. At 157, Romaine Malcolm (Amityville/Amityville) lost in the consolation quarterfinals to Charlie Bishop of Loras, 11-3.

Arnold Frost (Ithaca) was a winner in the heavyweight consolation quarterfinals, 3-1 over #7 Matt Schoenherr of the Milwaukee School of Engineering. But Mark Simmonds of Augsburg won when Frost had a medical forfeit and withdrew from the consolation semifinals.

Five Golden Eagle wresters, Weidler, Roberts, Cuffie, Malcolm and Frost, all have earned All-American status. SUNY Brockport now has 124 All-Americans in the program's wrestling history.
