SKANEATELES — For at least a few days, JW Simmons figured his junior season was over.
Having placed second in the Section III, Division II wrestling tournament on Feb. 13, the Skaneateles 99-pounder was pleased with his 31-3 record and the long list of accomplishments the Lakers had as a team.
And then his phone rang.
"Coach called and said 'I've got some bad news. You're going to have to make weight again,'" Simmons said. "We laughed about it. I was overjoyed."
Chosen as one of the wild cards, Simmons has spent the week preparing for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association tournament at the Times Union Center in Albany on Friday and Saturday.
