BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo wrestling team dropped its season opener to CSU Bakersfield, 22-14, at Alumni Arena on Thursday night.
The Roadrunners set the tone early with an upset 11-4 decision victory by Sergio Mendez over 14th-ranked Kyle Akins at 125 to take a 3-0 lead. Bryan Lantry tied things up with an 8-4 decision over Sean Nickell at 133.
A major decision at 141 gave CSUB a 7-3 lead. Jason Estevez responded with a 7-6 decision over Kalani Tonge to cut the Roadrunner advantage to 7-6.
CSUB dominated the middle weights, winning the next three matches to take a commanding lead in the match.
The Bulls bounced back with a dominant performance at 184. Brett Perry earned a 16-5 major decision over Dominic Ducharme.
Jake Gunning closed the match with another major decision win. The junior heavyweight beat Jarrod Snyder, 18-7.
"That was a disappointing loss," head coach John Stutzman said. "I have to take this loss on me, because maybe I didn't have them ready. We have to get back after it. We'll regroup and figure it out."
The Bulls will next wrestle at Iowa on November 17.
