RIT finishes ninth at 2019 Ithaca Invitational

ITHACA, NY -- The RIT wrestling team finished ninth out of 14 teams at the 2019 Ithaca Invitational Friday. The Tigers finished ninth with a team score of 65.5 points. Johnson and Wales leads with 147.0 points.

Senior Joe Lupisella (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) took second place at 174 lbs. He began with a 10-7 win over Alec Corrao (Ithaca) in his opening bout, and pinned Hunter Nelson (New England College) in his second round match at 2:59. Lupisella, the No. 1 seed, defeated Niko Chity (Norwich), 14-8, in Saturday's quarterfinal and advanced to the championship bout with a 6-5 win over Isaac Matthews (Oswego State) in the semifinals.

Junior Kaidon Winters (Athens, PA/Athens Area) placed third at 165 lbs. Friday, Winters, the top seed, defeated Dimitrios Tartsinis (Western New England) with a fall at :29 seconds, and Michael Angers (Castleton), 6-0 to to advance to the round of eight. He was defeated by Charlie Grygas (Oswego State) 8-4 in Saturday's quarterfinal. He went on to beat Steven Ocampo (Johnson and Wales) with fall at 2:29 and Zack Lawrence (Springfield) with a fall at 1:33. He beat Jeff Suschana (Western New England) with a fall at 1:12 and defeated Cole Karam (NYU), 9-2 in the third place match.

Freshman Austin Lamb (Owego, NY/Tioga) had a fine showing at 149 lbs. He went 2-0 on Friday, with a win over Conner Deboe (Baldwin Wallace), 13-6. He went on to beat Michael Vietri (Springfield) in the third round to advance to the quarterfinal before falling to No. 3 seed Max Tempel (Castleton) in Saturday's quarterfinal.

Chris Dean (Long Branch, NJ/Long Branch) advanced to the quarterfinals in the consolation round at 125 lbs, with wins over Patrick Lockwood (NYU), 6-2, KJ Sotomayor (Western New England) with a fall at 2:27, and Tyler Tweedie (New England College) 3-1, falling to John Stramiello (Ithaca).

Shane Murphy (Mt. Olive, NJ/Mt. Olive) went 2-1 on Friday and advanced to the consolation quarterfinals at 141 lbs. Isaiah Ocasio (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) went 1-1 Friday and lost in the consolation quarterfinals at 141 lbs Saturday

RIT returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 10 at the Ohio Intercollegiate Open hosted by Case Western Reserve.
