LA CROSSE, WI - Senior Mike McInally (Bergen, NY/Byron-Bergen) of the RIT wrestling team, lost in the championship match 6-2 to Seth Ecker of Ithaca at the 133 lbs. weight division on Saturday evening at the 2011 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships at the La Crosse Center in La Crosse, Wis. McInally, the fourth seed in this year's tournament, finished the season with a 37-4 record. With the runner-up finish, McInally earns his second All-Amerian honor.
McInally opened with a 9-3 win over Paul Marcello from John Hopkins in the first round. He then came from behind late to defeat fifth-seed Adam Sheley of host Wisconsin-La Crosse in the quarterfinals, 6-4. On Saturday morning, McInally defeated previously unbeaten, top-seeded William Livingston of Centenary College of New Jersey, 4-1 to advance his second NCAA Championship in three years.
Ecker and McInally have a storied history against one another. Both competed in 2008-09 at 125 lbs. and this season against each other at 133 lbs. Ecker is 4-2 all-time against McInally. Two seasons ago, McInally handed Ecker a 5-1 defeat before Ecker rebounded to win 3-1 for the title at the ECWC Championsips. Prior to tonight's bout these two met three times. McInally won 11-4 on Dec. 8 before Ecker won 5-6 at the New York State Championship, and most recently, 3-1 in sudden victory for the 2011 ECWC title. Ecker is 33-4 this season.
McInally won the Monarch, Red Dragon, and John Summa Invitational titles this season, and is a two-time ECWC Wrestler of the Week. He finished 16-0 in dual matches this season.
McInally, who missed all but one match in 2009-10 due to injury, finished 35-2 in 2008-09 and garnered his first All-American honor, earning runner-up honors at 125 lbs. at the 2009 NCAA Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He lost the championship match, 8-7 to Jake Oster of Elmhurst College. In that match, McInally was called for a controversial penalty for slamming his opponent that may have proved to be the difference. Both men led at various points throughout. He was named the 2009 ECWC Wrestler of the Year.
In 2008, McInally won his weight class at the ECWC championships, earned a trip to the NCAA Tourmament, and finished 33-5. As a freshman, McInally was 35-9 and competed at the NCAA Tournament.
He is 141-20 all-time at RIT, with the second most wins in program history. McInally was a tremendous 56-2 in dual meets, winning his final 36 dual matches in a row. He is a 10-time RIT Male Athlete of the Week, two-time ECWC Rookie and four-time ECWC Player of the Week, and won 10 tournament titles in his four seasons.
