The Golden Eagles take third place at the ECWC Championships
Junior Matt Ellis (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) won the 125-pound title for The College at Brockport wrestling team as the Golden Eagles finished third at the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference (ECWC) Championships hosted by Lycoming on Saturday.
Ithaca was announced as the team champion at the conclusion of the tournament and Brockport was named the second place team followed by Cortland. After recalculating the scores later in the evening, Cortland was elevated to second and Brockport was moved to third place.
The Bombers won the team title with 142.5 points and Cortland earned second with 124 points. Brockport was a close third with 123 points and host Lycoming and Oneonta tied for fourth (101.5 points each). RIT (54.5) was sixth, Alfred State (32.5) was seventh and Oswego (26) took eighth.
In the 125-pound title match, Ellis and Asher Kramer (Sloatsburg, NY/Suffern) were tied at 0-0 after the first period. Kramer struck first with a reversal for two points in the second period, but Ellis answered with an escape to trim the lead to 2-1. In the third period, Ellis used an escape to tie the score early and scored a take down for a 4-2 lead. Kramer earned a penalty point to make it 4-3, but was unable to earn an escape in the final minute and Ellis picked up a final point for riding to take the 5-3 win.
Roy Daniels (Spencerport, NY/Olentangy) and Paul Glover (Rochester, NY/Spencerport) each recorded second place finishes in their respective weight classes.
At 165 pounds, Daniels lost in a close match. He fell 6-5 in a tie breaker during overtime.
Glover dropped a 3-1 decision in the championship round of the 197-pound weight class.
At 133 pounds, James McCabe (Ronkonkoma, NY/Connetquot) took third beating out teammate Kevin O'Hagan (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY/Sachem North) 7-4.
Michael Leonard (Levittown, NY/W.T. Clarke) took home fourth place in the 141-pound weight class, while Jordan Dyer (Chenango Forks, NY/Chenango Forks) won his final match for a fifth place finish at 149 pounds.
At 157 pound, Michael Falcon (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY/Sachem North) finished in fourth, while freshman Peter Hailer (East Milton, MA/East Milton) recorded a fifth place finish with a win in his final 174-pound match.
Nicholas Coco (Eastchester, NY/Eastchester) finished the day in sixth place at 184 pounds and the heavyweights Cole Tristram (Newton Falls, NY/Clifton-Fine) and John Wilkinson (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) finished in third and fourth place, respectively.
