ITHACA, N.Y. - Two-time NCAA champion Yianni Diakomihalis won the 65kg freestyle title at the 2021 Poland Open on Wednesday in Warsaw. The UWW Rankings Series event that helps determines seeds in all three styles for both the Olympics and the 2021 World Championships
Diakomihalis went 1-1 in pool competition, defeating Poland's Eduard Grigorev 9-3 before dropping a controversial 7-6 contest to Iszmail Muszukajev of Hungary. Pulled into the semifinals, Diakomihalis responded with a resounding 15-4 triumph over eventual bronze medalist Joey McKenna, another match in a classic rivalry that has seen Diakomihalis top McKenna for the 2019 NCAA title and McKenna avenging it at Senior Nationals later that year. In the finals, Diakomihalis defeated Grigorev for a second time to capture gold with a 7-4 triumph.
