ITHACA, N.Y. - Junior Yianni Diakomihalis will compete in the 65-kilogram division at the 2021 Senior World Team Trials, held September 11-12 at the Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Nebraska. Champions at the trials will represent Team USA at the 2021 Senior World Wrestling Championships in Oslo, Norway on October 2-10.
Diakomihalis is the No. 1-seeded freestyle wrestler at 65kg, with the weight also including the likes of Joey McKenna, Evan Henderson, Luke Pletcher, Dean Heil, and Henry Pohlmeyer. In their last meeting, Diakomihalis defeated No. 2-seeded McKenna by way of technical superiority, 15-4, at the 2021 Poland Open in June. Henderson spent the last year competing against Diakomihalis in the Spartan Combat RTC wrestling room.
Due to his status as an Olympic medalist, Kyle Dake '13 has already accepted the 74-kilogram spot on Team USA for the World Championships and does not need to compete at team trials. Other Cornell affiliated competitors in Lincoln include Nahshon Garrett '16 (61kg) and volunteer assistant coach Nick Gwiazdowski (125kg).
