Cassella, DePrez lead Binghamton at Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open

NEWS

Six Bearcats place in the top three in their respective weight, Cassella and DePrez win titles

VESTAL, N.Y. - The Binghamton wrestling team had a strong showing at the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open, highlighted by individual titles by Brevin Cassella (165 pounds) and Lou DePrez (197 pounds). 149-pounder Nick Lombard also had a finals appearance, finishing second with a 4-1 record on the afternoon.

"I'm happy with the effort and fight out of most of our team today," head coach Kyle Borshoff said. "I thought we did a good job making adjustments from last weekend. It was awesome to see Lou and Brevin win championship belts along with all the other placers we had."

Cassella had a slower start to the day, squeaking out a 3-2 decision before stepping on the gas. Three of his four remaining wins came by major decision, including his 10-2 victory over Penn State's Matt Lee for the championship.

DePrez shined in his season debut, dominating on top throughout. Having locked up ride time in every match but the final, the 197-pounder used a third period takedown to win the championship bout. He is now 5-0 on the season.

Sam DePrez, Christian Gannone and Jacob Nolan all finished in third in their weight classes, combining for an 11-3 record. All three lost in the semifinals, but followed suit with big wins in third-place matches.

Ryan Anderson, Anthony Sobotker, and Ivan Garcia tallied multiple wins in the tournament. Anderson and Sobotker each had two pins, while Garcia won three straight bouts following an opening round loss. He eventually lost a match out from the fifth-place bout.

Heavyweight Collin Burns picked up his first win of his career, a 6-3 decision over Bucknell's Max Harar.
