ITHACA, N.Y. - The 14th-ranked Ithaca College wrestling team traveled north and kicked off dual meet action with a convincing 36-6 victory over Oswego State on Sunday, November 14. The Bombers set the tone early, quickly jumping out to an 18-0 lead and then riding that momentum to capture a decisive road win. IC is now 19-0 all-time against the Lakers.
Marty Nichols' squad looked sharp and never trailed once on the afternoon. While snagging eight of the ten bouts in the dual meet, five of them were bonus-point victories.
First year Matt Haycook started off the dual meet with a bang after taking out Paul Wehr, 8-3. The Canton, N.Y. native looked good on his feet, exemplified by a three-takedown performance. At 133, Dylan Earl kept the engine running with a 10-6 triumph over Alex Christman. The Laker could not stop Earl's double leg attack, as he notched three of them in the opening two periods to hop out to a 9-2 lead. Despite surrendering two takedowns in the final period, the senior built a comfortable enough lead to secure the decision and get his hand raised.
Oswego did not have a wrestler at 141-pounds, which gave Travis Jones the win via forfeit to build Ithaca's lead to 12-0. At 149, junior Matt Beyer continued taking steps in the right direction as he dominated Logan McGloine and picked up the first period fall. Tied 3-3 with just under a minute remaining in the opening period, Beyer hit a beautiful high crotch and transitioned to a double leg to get the takedown and take a 5-3 advantage. From there, the New Jersey product broke McGloine flat, secured an armbar and drove him over to put six more points on the board for the Bombers.
Ninth-ranked Adam Wagner (Flowrestling) continued to prove that he could be ready to challenge for an All-American spot this season at 157 after notching a first period fall over Nicolai Celestain. Upon securing an early takedown, the redshirt-junior went to work on top. After breaking the Laker down flat, Wagner trapped the far arm and hit a corkscrew to collect four near fall points. From there, he transitioned to a nearside cradle and picked up the pin in dominant fashion.
Oswego earned its first win of the dual meet in a tightly contested 165-pound bout. Trailing Isaac Mathews 1-0 with just over a minute remaining in the final period, freshman Wenchard Pierre-Louis hit a flashy standing granby roll to escape and even things at one apiece. With thirty seconds to go in the match, Mathews caught Pierre-Louis out of position and hit a blast double leg takedown to cap off an exciting 3-1 victory.
The final Laker victory of the afternoon came in what was perhaps the most entertaining match of the dual at 174-pounds, as eleventh-ranked Charlie Grygas (Flowrestling) took out IC rookie Jackson Gray. The Laker stormed to an early 2-0 lead after finishing off a textbook double leg takedown. However, the Bomber responded in the second period with a crucial takedown of his own off of a wild scramble in the closing seconds to go up 4-2. Leading 4-3 with under a minute remaining in the third, Gray nearly put the match away after countering a Grygas single leg attempt, but the Oswego standout swiftly granby rolled out of danger and countered Gray's attack with a slick go-behind move to clinch a narrow 5-4 win.
Behind a two-takedown performance, first year Jeremy Mazzella shifted the momentum as he earned his first-career dual meet victory with a convincing 6-0 triumph over Jacob Minier at 184-pounds. Reigning IC Invitational champion and ninth-ranked Eze Chuwkuezi (Flowrestling) continued his path to an undefeated season with a commanding 19-1 technical fall over Anthony Cascen at 197-pounds. Heavyweight Nick Galka bounced back from a tough outing at the IC Invitational and impressed with an 11-3 major decision over Jaden Hall to end the dual on a high note.
Four Bombers also competed in exhibition bouts on the afternoon. Michael Snowden kicked things off with a first period fall over Matthew Laubach at 133-pounds to net his first win of the season. Junior Tony Giovagnoli dazzled in his season opener with a quick pin off of an arm bar in the first period to defeat Damani Johnson. At 157, both Adrian Rosario-Beato and Tristen Schiafo squared off against Oswego's Bryce Smith, but dropped close decisions, 10-6 and 10-7, respectively.
Ithaca College will return to the mat next Saturday, November 20, when the unit travels to SUNY Cortland for the 2021 New York State Championships. Action is slated to begin at 9 a.m.
