Late Victories Send Ithaca Wrestling To Win At Oswego

OSWEGO, N.Y. - The 14th-ranked Ithaca College wrestling team maintained its perfect dual-meet record and pulled out a 24-15 victory at Oswego on Saturday, Dec. 13. Ithaca wrestlers broke a 15-15 tie with wins at 197 pounds and at heavyweight in the final two bouts of the dual to give Ithaca a 3-0 dual-match record on the season. Oswego fell to 0-1 in its first dual of the season.

Jimmy Kaishian, ranked 10th nationally at 125, started things with a pin in the second period to get Ithaca off to a big start. The pin came at 4:17. Henry Beaman followed with an overtime decision victory at 133 pounds. Beaman trailed 2-0 after two periods, tied the bout 4-4 in the third period and scored a takedown to get the victory. The Bombers then conceded six points via forfeit at 141 pounds.

Eamonn Gaffney got Ithaca back in the win column with a 7-1 decision win at 149, but Oswego answered with a 4-3 decision at 157.

Nick Velez pulled out a win at 165 for the Bombers. His match against Tyler Silverthorn was tied 4-4 after two periods, and after a third period was scoreless went to sudden-victory. Velez picked up an early takedown and a 6-4 decision victory to give the Bombers a 15-9 lead in team scoring with four bouts remaining.

Oswego won the next two matches by decision at 174 and 184 to tie the score at 15-15.

Greg DuVall put Ithaca back in front at 197 with an important victory. He led 4-2 after the first period, and then went ahead 7-2 and held a riding time advantage of 1:53 after the second period. He won 18-15 by decision and Ithaca led 18-15 headed to the heavyweight bout.

In the final bout of the day, Ithaca's Jake Davenport faced Andrew Cole of Oswego, and Davenport scored a first-period pin to give the Bombers a 24-15 win on the road.

Ithaca returns to action at the NWCA National Duals in Fort Wayne, Ind. on Jan. 9.
